Drawer Slides -- looking for alternatives

A local furniture builder had his annual garage sale over the weekend. I was able to buy 6 gorgeous maple drawers -- great dovetailing, cutouts for my daughter's hands to open & close -- all for $40. All I have to do now is build the chest.

The guy told me he made the drawers to accommodate Accuride's bottom-mount drawer slides -- all the cutting/etc is done to use them. Looking at Rockler.com, I'm looking at another $45-$50 for slides, more than I'm willing to spend at this point.

Does anyone have experience with any alternative slides, preferably bottom mount that don't show on the sides when the drawer is pulled out? Alternatively, are there any better deals than Rockler's? I don't have a HF or Rockler store nearby -- would have to be BORG/Lowe's or internet.

Sorry, in my experience all of the less expensive bottom mount slides are horrible, they lead to an early drawer death. I think I'd rather do wooden slides than the average metal/plastic bottom mounts.

No overlay on those drawers? Otherwise you could go with a side mount. Rockler does have some wooden bottom mounts that are dovetail keyed, could use 2 of those I suppose.

Thanks! I'll do some more homework. Maybe one day I can post something to the finished projects section...

Why not forego slides all together? Build the cabinet to match the drawers and just let them slide on rails.

Try these uhmw strips. I've used them on a couple of end tables, night stands and on my grand-daughers chest of drawers.

I like wood on wood too. My new kitchen island is wood on wood. If you wax the bottom and sides (if they could rub), they move pretty smoothly.

FWW Mag. June issue, tested 9 different bottom mount slides and gave the "Hettich Quadro IW Silent System" their "Best Value" label. $20 a pair for the 15" slide. These are soft close slides. Not cheap but the Accuride Easy Close are $47 a pair for the 16".

I ended up ordering the Hettich slides after looking at the review, prices, etc. They're being delivered today.

                  Thanks, Big Tim!
