    Making veneer for marquetry...

I tuned up my bandsaw (14" craftsman euro style) in prep for some veneer resawing, and it went fairly well. I made some veneer. The first couple of slices were of curly maple, and my drift angle adjustment was a bit off, so they ended up too thin for the marquetry for my project. So now I have a couple of small slices of 0.025" curly maple, well done 16-32....

After adjusting for the drift a bit, I started to get some nice cuts. That little bandsaw does alright for small veneer sawing. I cut some 7" poplar slices (green coloration), some 7.25" curly maple slices, and some 4" or so purpleheart slices.

Doing this required that I tune my bandsaw, tune my jointer (8" jet, was off a bit), and change my drum sander paper, so overall a good get the shop up to speed kind of thing.

It'll still be a while until I get this project done, it's a biggie, but I thought that I'd share this stuff....soon I get to layout and cut the marquetry, and that's what it's all about!!!

How thick are the final results?

I made 2 thicknesses. The thin stuff (not suitable for marquetry) is 0.025", 1/40th. The thicker stuff is 0.05", 1/20th.

What do you use to cut the shapes? knife? scroll saw?

I use the scroll saw for my marquetry cutting. If I were to use a knife, I could use commercial veneer, but I like cutting it on the scroll saw. I typically go about 1/16" for my scrolling veneer, get much smaller and you risk the veneer being destroyed on the up swing of the blade. I think I'll be ok with this 1/20" stuff though.
