I would run the pump full time until I get the water the way you want it. The reason you would turn it off it is to retain heat that is lost at night when the tep. drops. I would keep the clorine high and work on the alkalinity. If it is way off it will alter how your other chemicals work. I think getting a water sample and getting your level corrrect followed by a little waiting for it to stabilize will do the trick. Good luck.

Rich/et al, thanks for answering stupid questions. I was doing some reading online and decided to go check some things when I took the dogs out tonight. As I expected, the chlorine level was back to very low 24hrs after addng what I thought was way to much shock. What I realized was the recommended amt to add assumes you start with chlorine in the water from a tablet... . I have not had a tablet in - no convenient way to do it.

My pool has a slotted cover that fits over the inlet/outlet ports. I stuck a tablet in the outlet port cover of the pump and will let it run overnight. I will retest in the AM. Worst that happens in the level is way high. If It looks better I will reshock. I also plan to pull anoter water sample and go to the pool store. Pretty clear I need some education.

Finally got it figured out. I went down to the pool place today with a sample and the filter. It looked horrible. He took one look at the filter and asked if I was on a well. Turns out the metals in the water react with the chlorine and you get brown water. The more chlorine you add the worse it gets. I got an additive that takes the metal out. I put it in earlier today and it is already working. Will check tomorrow and if I need more will add it. Once the water is clear again I will start the chlorine.
