I would run the pump full time until I get the water the way you want it. The reason you would turn it off it is to retain heat that is lost at night when the tep. drops. I would keep the clorine high and work on the alkalinity. If it is way off it will alter how your other chemicals work. I think getting a water sample and getting your level corrrect followed by a little waiting for it to stabilize will do the trick. Good luck.
