    Carpet And Painting

    To All:
I need to repaint interior, exterior and recarpet my home this summer. I have two nine year old boys so keep this in mind. They are not slobs just normal kids. The questions are.
    1) Paint and carpet selection?
    2) Do I paint with the old carpet in first then recarpet?

Note: This will all be done by professionals so any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    1. Go with a quality paint, not the cheapest thing at a box store.
    2. Paint first and then replace the carpet.

        1) What recommendations for exterior paint?
        2) What recommendations for interior paint?
        3) Best pad and carpet recommendations?

I agree, but what I would also do would be to remove a strip of carpet a couple of inches wide from the entire perimeter of the room first, assuming that your carpets are right up to the skirting (baseboard, I think you call it).

This allows you to paint without getting any fluff on the brush and ensures that when you do remove the carpet, none of the newly-painted trim gets scuffed by it. The carpet won't move, but I'd give the edges and the newly-exposed floor a good vacuum before I started! If your carpet is held in place by tack strips, beware these when sanding!

Just to add to what Ray said...

            If it was my project..

            1. Remove all the carpet & padding. Talk to your installer if they want the old tack strips left in place or if they are installing new ones. Doing this will eliminate making your newly painted walls a dusty mess. Plus if should make your carpet install cheaper.

            2. Don't ask the installers about new skirts. They will look at you funny

            3. For paint, I like Martin Senour and I hate Glidden.

            4. As far as carpet suggestions, I hate carpets. But I will suggest to go with the best padding available if you plan to keep your carpet for a long time. I know people who change carpet every 4 years which I think is insane. But thats me.

            5. If the tack strips are being left in place, save some of the old padding to cover them while you are working. Kneeling on a tack strip just plain sucks.

We've had great results with Kelly-Moore and Parker paint for the exterior. Just make sure you prep the surfaces well.

As far as interior, can't recommend a specific brand, but I like semi-gloss finish because it's easy to clean. I have three kids and a large dog. The 'washable' flat paint that prior owners used on the walls always looks grungy, even after washing!

Before you do anything else, rip out the old carpet, padding. I would also pull the tack strips up. No reason to leave 'em in place and have to worry about working around them unless your installer says you will save a significant amount by leaving them down.

When we refinished the house we went with burber stain guard carpet which worked great and is easy to keep clean.

Definately paint first and carpet second also keep plenty of putty and paint for touchup because carpeting can be rough on walls especially when they use the kickers.

If you're having it done by professionals, I would carpet first then paint. Otherwise you will have plenty of touch-up to do or pay for a call back from the painter.

If they are true professionals, there should be no worries about paint on the new carpet.

We always, whether new or not, fully protect the flooring with canvas drop cloths and tape off all woodwork.

I'd go with Behr satin for the interior.

Paint first. I like Zinsser brand paints both for int. & ext. they have a 5yr. gaurantee for mold & mildew. They come in flat, satin or semi-gloss, go with the semi-gloss Kitchen & Bath (usually it has more pigments). 1 coat of Zinsser 1-2-3 primer and 2 coats of the Zinsser Kit & Bath paint.
With young kids in the house, I would install laminate flooring instead of carpet, soo much easier to keep clean & maintain.

Always paint before carpet. In fact carpet should be the last job on the list. That is except furniture and picture hanging etc...

In my experience, normal kids create all kinds of mess/dirt whether they are slobs or not.

I have had much better luck keeping berber carpet clean than regular carpet. Also, consider a berber with multiple colors rather than a solid. Speaking from experience, a small spot of ink on a carpet that already has a few variations is a lot less noticable.

Hmm, I would remove all carpet and padding then paint. THen put new carpet down. Seems to me that would cut down a lot on the dirt/dust from covering freshly painted walls.

I'd vote for Sherman William's Duration paint for the exterior, life time guarantee (not that a paint really lasts a lifetime though )

ps - may not be able to spray this paint on though because it's thick, we brushed ours.
