ID:	836194Here is a couple of photos of a decoration piece I made out of pecan. The base is a slice of a bulge on a limb and the mushrooms are band saw cut out of a smaller highly figured limb. No lathe was used in making these mushrooms, it’s all carved out with the band saw, then sanded into shape and finished shaping with a carving knife. It is final sanded with 1000 grit and sprayed with clear mat finish. The real life size mushrooms that I sell in several art galleries, have a nice contoured one piece base, cut out with the mushroom. These are one cut, not a base or mushroom top glued on. I hear a lot of comments of how in the heck did they do that!

How the heck do you do that?? Seriously would love to see some build pics, unless that's a trade secret.

    Very nice.

          WOW! Great work. Genius!

Capncarl, I am amazed how your mind's eye translates things into wood. Similar to an artist painting onto canvas a vision in his mind of a seascape, landscape or person. I knew a Japanese man that did similar things and for about 6 months I wondered what he did even though I asked hi,. He kept talking about his woodwork, but something didn't quite add up. One day, I asked his wife what he did. She replied: "He is an art professor at a Jesuit university in Osaka." He could "see" things (in wood) all the way through well before he made them.

I don’t think I have haven’t mentioned my mushrooms at Sawdust Zone. I’m just now starting to try to get them rolling in several of her art galleries that sell my tables and Tiny Trees. It’s not a trade secret and I would like to share my learnings with the group. They make nice presents..... I hope more customers prove me right by purchasing them. I’ll post some photos of the cut out and finishing soon.

This is a photo of my “standard” mushroom. I also make wall hanging mushrooms that have been well accepted also.

Those are beautiful! I like the first ones better. The bark on the base really sets the mushrooms off nicely.

Thanks for the compliments. The rounded piece of wood that I used for the base of the 3 mushrooms arrangement was the side cut from a burl that I salvaged from some Hurricane Michael wood. It was football shaped and size. I quickly found that there wasn’t much useful wood there as it practically fell apart with the side that I used being the only salvageable piece. Ironically, this is the only rounded piece of wood that I was able to salvage...... and I was able to salvage quite a bit of wood.

Photos of 5 firewood racks of Chinaberry, Red Cedar, Asian Elm, Red Bud, Magnolia, Leyland Cypress, Dogwood, Pecan, Yellow Poplar and more, and none that I can make round arrangement bases out of.
