    Music/Jewelry for my grandaughter's Christmas

I saw this project a long while back and thought ... "someday" .... it was showcased on The WoodSmith Shop season 8. I modified the dimensions a bit and added a couple of twists but basically it's that box.

If I never cut another 22.5 degree angle it will be fine with me ... getting the spline groves cut EXACTLY right was for me a challenge. The woods are red oak sides, white oak bottom border, black walnut top border and the corners are from some cocobolo I had as scrap. I used waterlox original as the finish and was pleased with that product (first time I used it).

I installed a windup 18 note musical movement that plays "My Favorite Things" when the lid is raised.

I bought the inlay for the top from Inlay Product World and was pretty shocked at what they can cost ...

It has a wart or two but I hope she will enjoy it as she gets older (she's 6 now) ...

That sir, is a work of art! It really looks great and I bet your granddaughter will cherish it. I've never saw one look so dog gone exquisite before. Great job!

        Beautifully done!

And I know the feeling about cutting odd angles repetitively! The first one done correctly gives a sense of pride, but the rest just don't seem to come any easier!

Yeah the smallest error gets amplified x 16 and you don't really see it until the very last piece you have to fit.

It was a good learning project but I'm glad to have it finished.

Thank ya'll for the nice comments.

That is a real work of art! The joinery looks machine-perfect, and that top is exquisite!

Maybe at 6 she just likes that her grandpa made it for her, but as she grows older she will also appreciate the artistry in it. The right gift for any age!

Thank you all for the nice words.

I was laughing about the joinery comment... First it was a true test of patience to get it done to my satisfaction... And second... I replaced a lower section of a roll up garage door today on my smaller/older shop... And when finished I had about a 1/2"gap on one corner... My solution was to screw a scrap piece of pine over it on the inside and call it "done"... I guess precision depends on the project... AND THE MOOD... :-)
