    Pine is fine!

Well, the step stool came out ok for pine ;-)
Design by Ana White, slightly modified by adding 5 degree taper to rear uprights.
I haven't put on the topcoat yet, and it still needs some sanding, but its pretty much set.

Looks great. How are you mitigating the cross grain sides to top? I have always used vertical grain in step stool sides due to strength issues, was this a consideration of yours?

Thanks guys. The finish is multi step spray finish. The first coat is amber shellac, followed by seal coats of clear shellac, transtint golden brown, seal coats then top coat. I might have put it in to service a little too soon.... I have little footprints in the finish ;-) I thought the shellac was dry...
The reason for the cross grain, Mark (im not a fan either, my other bench was vertical) was the required width - I was able to make the piece using a 1x12 white pine and 2x syp As for strength the rails are pocket screwed together. Its not fine furniture and the whole project was a day and a half build/finish.

No, Tim, but would love one of those turbines I am using my old compressor and a hvlp gun that I had from '04. Its the wagner conversion hvlp using a #3 needle and capset. Its still gives ok results, the gun sometimes spits out junk, which I can only assume is latex somewhere in the return tube.... it seems that stuff just never comes out. I have soaked the gun in... you name it. Not a bad gun, only criticism is it seems to like a higher pressure to get good atomization at which point the low overspray selling point is moot. With the price of finishes it makes for a good argument to get a turbine.
