    Custom Picture Shelf for Mom

It has been awhile since I managed to build anything, but my mom moved to an assisted-living community a couple of months ago. I noticed that her small room didn't have space for the pictures of the family or the full-size bookshelf she had been using.

So, I designed a picture shelf which holds 5x7 pictures and smaller, mostly to keep my family from crowding the shelf with large pics. And I designed it to make the most of the space in this one corner. It isn't a highly finished piece, but it serves the purpose.

And, grin, if you look carefully you might notice that it seems to be upside down. Well, the day I finished it, mom called to say she was moving down the hall...and the spot which I had designed the shelf to fit was on the opposite wall. Oh well...adds a bit of interest.

I still think the best part of woodworking for me is designing pieces to fit in special places.

    Later...Warren

It looks nice! I didn't notice it being upside down even after reading about it! Great job!

Very nice! Something like that would look good in my MIL's room; she has a bunch of small pictures.

Upside down, who says? Pretty spiffy either way. Biggest question is.......How does MOM like it? Seems she's the only one that really counts. Pat

Nice Job Warren. Not sure why you say it is upside down? Care to elaborate?

                        Hey Turaj,
I wanted to make the shelves look a bit thinner, so I ran a 1/4" cove around the front edges. Supposed to be on top.

Hard to see in the pic, but the cove is now on the bottom. Of course, who says which side a cove should be on?

Thanks Warren! I think I can see in the picture (after enlarging it).

But, if you look more carefully, you see that your shelf is just fine. It is the room that is up-side down
