    Replacement SMT fence

I have a BT3000, but it didn't come with the fence for the sliding miter table, nor any related parts to attach it to the table. Are there options for making a replacement?

Yes we had a member who made a number of BT3000 parts and he made a SMT fence - I will look it up later.

The SMT fence is similar, albeit 3-1/2 inches shorter, on at least a couple of the mobile Ryobi saws that were equipped with an SMT I believe. I just did a quick Google and there are two listed on E-Bay. I have a RTS21 in addition to my BT3100 and the aluminum extrusion, end caps, indicator, and clamp assembly are all the same, but like I said it is 3-1/2 inch shorter, but functions exactly the same otherwise.

      https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C...30.GHad-YTXDQE

In case that didn't work (I see it changed when I looked back at it, here is a specific: https://www.ebay.com/i/283651313945?...SABEgK8_PD_BwE

      and also: https://www.ebay.com/i/233353389509?...yABEgKJ8fD_BwE

      Might be worth exploring.

This is the fence modification by Rod Kirby some years back

        https://www.sawdustzone.org/articles/jigs-fixtures/824912-smt-fence-v2-0

        he linked a PDF https://www.sawdustzone.org/sdz/legacy/smtfnc2.pdf

        I have these comments:
There's four or five key pieces here. And its harder to describe if you don't have a functioning SMT fence in front of you to refer to.
        1. The first piece is the aluminum extrusion - it is virtually the same piece of extrusion as used for the rip fence.
        2. The second piece is not visible here - the sliding plastic black button whose rectangular base slides in the track in the bottom of the fence and the button itself goes in the 3/8" hole usually on the right hand side of the SMT. This is the all important pivot for the fence... to use the angle scale on the top. You can use the hole on the left, too but I have always used the right.
        3. The third is the orange tab seen on the lower back of the fence in the pic above. It is the indicator (not the back of the fence) for the angle scale.
        4. The fourth element is the black hold down bracket - easy enough to make of wood - fit to the slots in the back of the miter fence extrusion to hold it tightly.
        5. The fifth is the knob or handle - the one shown by Rod was his choice but the OEM one is a black common 3.8" threaded knob. Under the knob is a washer and 5/16"-18 x 3.5" hex head bolt. The bolt goes through the bottom of the bracket and through the knob. The head can be dropped through the large hole at the top of the slot in the SMT and then slid down the slot and locked by the knob to fix the fence angle.
So a fence relies heavily on the fence extrusion, pivot and the indicator. I think I could make the bracket and even a angle indicator. The knob and bolt are available at any good hardware store common stock parts.

If I needed a complete fence, I would first try and see if I could buy the fence extrusion and pivot from the Ryobi parts dealers The extrusion was sold as repair parts for the rip fence and miter fence in one length and was also available as an extended length for an extended miter fence.

Failing that I would contemplate making a fence from wood. I would make a row of holes a few inches long for a 3/8" pivot rod that could be moved and locked from the top absent the slide and slot on the bottom and that plastic pivot. Then I'd make a bracket that could slide along the back and secure the miter fence to the SMT. And finally, this is optional, make some sort of indicator for the angle scale.

Any more questions, ask/ I can make any measurements you need.

Thanks CWSmith for the info about the RTS21, I'll see if any of those pop up around me. I'm in Canada and shipping from the US tends to make ordering from eBay pricier (even before the exchange rate).

LCHIEN, that is great information. I wondered about how it was supposed to get the fence to line up to be at the correct angles and I had never clued in about the orange plastic piece. I think I have most of what I need to try and make something that should work.

If it's not too much, could you take a picture of the bottom of the fence with the button, indicator and handle? Ideally with a ruler or something that I can use to get scale?

Again thanks for the help, you guys are great!

If you have not read my FAQ on the BT3000, you should get it. It will have told you about the orange thingy. Linked at the bottom of my posts.

I have located Rod Kirby's personal photographs of this assembly. and will upload them in probably a couple of posts (due to post size limits).

For readers not familiar with Rod Kirby, he was one of the early BT3 members and users, located in Melbourne, Australia who was among other things well known for his beautifully appointed ship and jigs and fixtures. Particularly noted by other BT3 members was how spotless his shop looked in every photo (look up Rod Kirby's Shop Tour in the Archives https://www.sawdustzone.org/forum/sa...tour?t=29547It )
            Very Inspirational!
Unfortunately Rod passed away in 2016 - I did get to meet him once (2004) along with Pappy and some other members.(click for picture, me on left, Pappy, 2nd from right, Rod on Right) We miss you Rod.

And I have actual possession of the original Kirby miter fence and his micropositioner also. He sent it to me for safekeeping after he retired his BT3000.
These are pictures of my original miter fence next to Rod's

Those are fantastic thank you. I do have your FAQ, it helped me figure out and fix the shim issue. I probably glossed over the part about the orange tab when I was going through it since I didn't have it (or the rest of the fence).

I just did a search on eBay https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...usion&_sacat=0

I got a listing for complete miter fence for $280 which is ridiculous.
But two of the clamping brackets (miter fence holder is apparently the proper name) one for $24 and the other for $38 both with knob and bolt
And one miter fence extrusion with black ends and orange thingy but no pivot pin for $50
and one replacement rip fence extrusion which is also the extrusion for the miter fence as well.for $38, naked.

At Amazon, search for Ryobi BT3000 parts

At Amazon Miter fence extrusion $37 https://www.amazon.com/Ryobi-BT3000-...43&s=hi&sr=1-3
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F3BG7V2..._t4_B00FOSROBQ (two pack of fence for $68))

                      Ah here! Hit the jackpot:
                      https://www.searspartsdirect.com/pro.../id-0182011805
only $15.60 for the rip fence extrusion. same as the miter fence extrusion except it has a couple of different holes drill which is no biggie. Shipping will cost you a few bucks.
And here is the miter fence itself, only $11.76 from SearsParts https://www.searspartsdirect.com/pro...6/id-969188001
And the orange thingy $2.49 https://www.searspartsdirect.com/product/2bu8fazdug-0009-316/id-969191-001
And take a flyer on this one... for $5.24 right picture, right number, but wrong description for locator pin (pivot pin)
                      https://www.searspartsdirect.com/pro.../id-661811-001

If that pivot pin doesn't work this probably will:
Pivot pin (locator pin) here $3.99 https://www.partswarehouse.com/Ryobi...0181010207.htm

All the above indicated stock. BT3 parts are getting hard to find, I played detective here for you. Get 'em while you can. If I were you I'd go for the three bolded parts from Sears for one shipping price, if the pivot pin turns out wrong, get ti from Parts warehouse for an additional separate shipping charge.
