Many of the links are not working in the various threads. To be clear, do I need the wavy shims AND the guide holder?.

Ah, some of the posts in this forum are way more than 10 years old.
While I can't guarantee that they'll get fixed, I can guarantee they won't get fixed unless you post the page the link is on and which link on that page doesn't work.
And in absence of a clear context, what you need depends on the circumstances.

To add to what Loring is saying the new style BT3100 wavy shims are only necessary if you have all the parts from that series. For owners of the BT3000 they would be an "upgrade" and the jury is out on if it is worthwhile. Some of us used Norm's shim fix and have been problem free ever since, while others never have had a problem. Parts are anywhere from hard to find to not available which makes the "upgrade" more appealing however some have also bent their own shims from shim stock.
