    fixed base router

This is about the best deal I have seen on a quality router.I have heard mixed reviews on Tool King but it might be worth the risk.About $70 delivered.

At 1 3/4hp that router is a little shy on power compared to some of the other routers out there. As for the quality of Dewalt routers I'm not sure how it would compare to a PC or my Hitachi
    Opinions are like gas;
I don't mind hearing it, but keep it to yourself if it stinks.

I saw the kit version of this router (DW616PK?) with fixed and plunge base on clearance at Lowes for $100 a couple days ago.

Router HP ratings are kinda like shop vacuum power ratings: they don't mean a whole lot. (Well, okay, routers aren't as wildly exaggerated as shop vacs.)

All the routers in the 1.75 to 2.25HP class draw either 11 or 12 amps; this DeWalt draws 11. That works out to right at 1.75HP. Using the exact same formula, a 12A router produces about 1.9HP. So, real world, there's not much difference, especially when you consider that no universal motor is capable of producing its peak HP for more than a couple-few seconds without a meltdown.

I've looked at these DeWalts several times; they're nicely made. Router guru Pat Warner likes them. I happen to be shopping for a router to dedicate to my new dovetail jig so I'm seriously tempted by this deal.

That's the exact reason I just pulled the trigger on this. Already have the DeWalt 618B3 and love it so a DW616 dedicated to the dovetail jig at this price is a no brainer IMHO.

              $77.98 shipped.
Thanks for the heads up MM.

Was it just one item on the clearance table or were all these kits marked down?

Not a bad price. but it is refurbed.
I got the kit for $100 at sears a year ago.
I would look for a deal on a new one that comes with the plunge base.
I have that router and I love it. except for no variable speed.
                  Have used it a lot.
The only thing I do not like is the lock on the plunge base.
sometimes it comes loose and the router raises up.
never caused a problem, but is a minor irritation.

It wasn't on the clearance table. The display had been taken down already, and the clearance price was marked on the shelf where all of the boxed routers are stored (in this Lowes it is a different row than where the router display is).

It's a very good router but it does not have variable speed or soft start.

                        I've seen Pat Warner recomends the DW 618 / 625 / 621 , but never seen him mention this one ( the 616 ).

I picked up one of the DW616's just like it at my local Ace hardware who were clearing their Dewalt stock at 35% off. I already have a the 3 base DW618 but needed a fixed base to mount in my RT. Rather than give up the fixed base from the DW618B3, I bought the DW616 for about $80.00. Now I can leave the DW616 in my RT and swap out motors whenever I need the VS and a little more more power. (Just an additional fixed base for the DW618 was going to cost me $40.00!) ...$100 is not a bad price ....if it isn't a refurb!

The router itself DW616/618 does feeel really good in hadheld operation, as the center of gravity is low, therefore its great for using with a DT jig etc.!

Sure beats the old Craftsman (1 3/4Hp) that I replaced in the RT!

                          Just my 2 cents!

                            Another Way To Go

If you need a big guy for the router table. This is not bad.It is refurbished but it is a pretty good deal. You don't get free shipping and you can't use the 10% off since it is not sold by Amazon.93% score is scary though. Most that sell refurb stuff have a lower score.

This seems like a good deal but you can also get a new PC 690 from Amazon for $105 after the rebate. Even better to me is the PC 694 kit (variable speed soft start) for $139 after a $60 rebate. If I already had a DeWalt I would probably stay that way, however.
