I read the headline in the stateside papers tonight says the gas prices are going towards $3.75 or even $3.99 per gallon.

Heck, here in southern France yesterday the gas prices I saw posted are 1.65 euro per liter which works out to roughly $8 per US Gallon.

Which is why they drive such dangerously small cars over there... Actually what blows me away is how bad gas mileage averages were allowed to get since the 1980s... I recall fairly typical 4 cylinder 5 speed economy cars back then like the Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra etc... all got fairly decent, in the mid to upper 30s mileage, then it slowly started to slide down, 1 or 2 MPG at a time...

I actually still miss my old 1976 Toyota Celica... Good, reliable, fun, affordable car to drive! My Saturn is okay, but not the same...

It's above $4 for regular up here. I haven't priced avgas in the last week but it's probably above $5.

Regular was going for $3.87 to $3.92 per gal. Plus was going for $3.95 to $3.97 and premium was $4.02 to $4.13 today in Hilo Hawaii. What gets me p___ off is they found a large amount of oil in N. Dakota called the Bakken. They claim it has more oil there than the Saudis. They discovered the Bakken in 2007 but they can't get it out fast enough to the refinery. Not to sure about this, but they do not have any pipe lines to the refineries b/c of environmental issues. Can anyone from N. Dakota confirm this.

I think rumours of a huge find in the Bakken trend are just that.

It's shale oil and just getting the stuff out of the ground is expensive, complicated and messy. Unless they can pump several millions of barrels per day, it's a comparative drop in the worldwide production bucket.

Barring a revolt in Saudi Arabia, this little price spike will probably pass, but gas will never drop back to $2/gallon.

Back in the mid 80's we had to buy race gas way over 100 octane, leaded for high compression motors. Some guys bought avgas, but there was some talk that it didn't have proper chemistry. Back then the price for race gas auto fuel from VP in 114 octane was over $5/gallon.
