    Had a great weekend

About a month ago my oldest daughter, 17, decided she wanted to make a stained glass window for a class project. She picked a picture, and we went to the glass shop, picked out all the colors of glass she'd need, some lead and a few other supplies. A few weeks ago I showed her how to cut glass and she practiced on a few scraps I had from my last project and then for the past three weekends she's been in the basement cutting and grinding glass. We spent the weekend in the garage assembling with a break last night for her to go to prom Saturday Night. She was up at 8 this morning and we nearly finished cutting and soldering the all the lead today before I had to leave for a flight.

She's going to build the frame for it while I'm gone this week. She loves doing it and we had a lot of fun working on it together. We did have to go find a professional to help us cut a perfect circle because it kept coming out lopsided when we did it. I think she's found a new hobby.

Sounds like a neat project. I'm hoping you post pictures of the finished window.

Making stained glass art can be fun and develop into a great hobby/business. Participating together makes it even better. For cutting circles, try one of these circle cutters...makes it easy.

Could be the start of something. Maybe let her put up some pics here... (Also, just to be on the safe side, make sure everybody follows the safety rules for working with lead...)

So you make the sconce or lamp and she makes the glass! Sounds like the beginning of a beautiful business!

+1. The house I grew up in was full of antique stained and leaded glass. I remember one of the panels breaking and requiring repair. My mom shopped around for one of the better artisans, who ended up keeping in their shop for over a year. During that time the artist offered to purchase it from my mother about six times (each time she declined).

The repair work was beautifully done but it was very expensive. All the pieces were bevelled and had a green cast to them. The one-year hold up was the artist searching for the right glass.

                Here is the original.

And here is Hannah's interpretation. She wasn't able to do the whole thing and you can't see the face clearly when it is laying on a table, plus it is her first.

Are the black markings in an arc at the top of the window text? What does it say? Couldn't quite make it out in the photo.

It says Daniel followed by a double P which indicated Daniel is accepted by the church to be a prophet. The original window is in the Augsburg Cathedral. It is the oldest known example of stained glass believed to have been made in the late 11th or early 12th century.

Very nice. Do you plan to display this somehow? Maybe in a backlighted frame?
