First Storm of the Season is on the way

Well look like our first major storm of the season will be here Monday night through Wednesday. The jet stream picked up the remnants of a Typhoon and is steering it right toward California. They are expecting high winds and heavy rain. I am ready I think, took the Patio Table Umbrellas down put the patio chairs away for the year and cleaned the gutters and downspouts. Not worried about flooding but about tree limbs and trees coming down. The leaves haven't start falling yet and heavy rain with high wind will probably break a lot of limbs and may cause some trees to topple, I have one tree in the front yard that is self pruning and will shed a lot of branches of different sizes. Should be OK as the are not hanging over the house. Also expect the Birch tree in back yard to shed branches also. Now if this was November then we could have street flooding as the leaves would clog the storm drains. Major flooding will not be a problem as the lakes and streams are low and the ground is dry so the rain will be absorbed. I also change all the wiper blades on the cars. For once I am ready for the rain, usually get caught will clogged gutter or bad wiper blades. I know the other parts of the country have had bad weather recently but this a big storm for California and will help with all the wildfires and maybe end the fire season. Now down in La La land the will probably have mud slides in the fire areas so their misery will continue. They are not expecting a lot of snow in the Sierras though as this is a warm storm and the temp aren't that cold yet, which means a high snow level.

Me I will be out in my shop starting some Christmas projects. Took the AC out of the window and put the glass back in the other day and brought out the heater, won't be plugged in yet as it is not cold enough. Will probably spend and day or so cleaning up the mess here at home and over at church as we have alot of trees over there.

Maybe it's the first storm for Sacramento, but we had several inches of snow last weekend and it was cold, too.

We've got to get the yard "stabilized", which means putting down topsoil and mulch, by Wednesday so we can get our final signoff. I'm gonna be doing a lot of shoveling tomorrow and then I need to tie things down so they don't disappear in the breeze.

We are expecting the same storm, though they say it will be more intense to the south of us. Today the patio furniture goes into storage, the good stuff, and we get to watch the plastic blow around all winter. Most of the hanging plants are past their prime but I do hate to loose the flowers this early. The forecast is for 55mph winds and 2" of rain a day. That 2" will arrive in several torrential downpours where it rains sideways. Then it stops until you are on the other side of the block walking the dog, then it comes back from whatever direction you are walking into.

It's early this year, we usually get our first storm on Halloween.

For those of you unfamiliar with California weather, this is the first rain/storm we've had since April.

I usually depend on the first storm to knock the leaves off the trees, but one this strong this early is not normal. That is why I expect a lot of branches to come down. Heavy rain, geen leaves still in the tree and stong winds. You guys at Tahoe won't get to much out of this this storm because it is considered a warm storm so the snow level will be higher than Tahoe but higher up on Heavenly or Mt Rose or Kirkwood should get a bunch. Now watch after all the warning and prep the storm track will change and go farther north or south.

It's here. We've already received over 2.5" of rain and the wind is blowing it sideways. We get fine droplets that are almost like a fog.
I haven't seen any downed trees but there is a lot of debris on the road.

I was just reading that Fresno is having their big fair right now. it's just about closed down, no rides open and no concerts today or tomorrow.

Official rain fall total here in Sacramento 3.1 inches Th largest on record. Not much compared to other states but a lot for dry Sacramento. 250 call for tree/limbs down, power outages and lot of accidents. No major damage reported.

I had a lot of water standing the in the back yard but once it stopped raining about 5:30 pm most of it was gone in an hour, I did put in a good drainage system. I have a lot of leaves to pick and lots of small branches/twigs to clean up.

I do have to repair a water leak in one of the replacement vinyl window in one of the bedrooms. LOML found the carpet wet under the window and on closer inspection I found a seam in the vinyl frame with sealer/caulk missing. It has probably been this way since they were install about 8 years ago. I removed the sill and found some dry rot on the end so I assume I will be replacing drywall and maybe some of the wood framing underneath and along side the window. As my Caulk gun was at church for another project I used plumbers putty to seal the leak for now. Will work in the window Thursday after things dry out and I can remove it. Have fan blowing on it now and things are drying up so I looks like the damage is in one corner of the window but I want to remove it and some dry wall to make sure the insulation isn't wet and to make sure there is no mold. Have to go get some respirators tomorrow to wear in case there is mold. My BIL and I don't need to get some kind of Lung infection with the H1N1 going around. I have the lumber and drywall out in the garage so it shouldn't be to expensive unless we find a lot of mold then it will be up to the Insurance company. It was nice being retired and not having to go out in it today. The 3 dogs are a little stir crazy as they didn't get their 2 hours at the dog park this afternoon or the walk this morning. I will call the window company also.

I was hoping for Niki's photo up here (nice to have you back, Niki) at Lake Tahoe but instead we got a lot of rain. Now it's blowing like crazy. So far only one projectile almost got loose (top of a coal bucket we use for charcioal). I need to check for leaks but the 14 yards of topsoil and mulch we put out to stabilize parts of the yard and avoid creating a new creek are the big concern. Gotta run out to the airport and see whether the airplane is still mine or whether the insurance company is going to be buying it from me.

Had this been snow instead of rain, I'm guessing it Would have accumulated 3-6 feet. If this is a precursor of the winter, I could be getting in a lot of snow shoveling and shop time.

Norm, we now have your typhoon! That storm was rolled up and pushed across the north Pacific and landed in central California.

As of about 6PM last night we only had 1" of rain but another 2" added to that by this morning for a total of 3". It's been so dry here that 3" has hardly raised the river. I was hoping for enough rain and some sun come the weekend to be able to go kayaking, but it looks like the river is still too low. At least this should put an end to fire season.
