    Historic Newspapers

Being a garage sale/yard sale junkie, I try to catch them as I can. I think the excitement for me is never knowing what I'll find. Some years ago, at a garage sale for items left by a deceased grandfather, I found some cool tools and a stack of old newspapers, that were his collection. I don't remember what I paid, but they were dirt cheap.

The oldest is 1763, and there are many during the Lincoln administration. I had no idea what I would ever do with them, but thought that someday they may be very valuable. I signed up on an antiques forum, but thought I would get some input here first. Any thoughts?

Old newpapers have always fascinated me. I kept the local paper when JFK was killed. One of the things I did when my two grandsons were born was to buy a newspaper and put it away to give them some day.

I would think that newspapers that old would have a pretty good value.

i think the value of the papers would depend upon whether they depicted some important historical event... i.e. the day lincoln was shot, or the end of the civil war, for example. or just a random sampling of a typical newsday.

I have only one "old" newspaper, and it's not that old. I bought it on the way home the day President Kennedy was shot, when I was 13 years old.

I agree with that. For anyone just wanting to spend some time reading old newspapers, the local papers are usually available on microfilm at libraries. There are a lot of historical newspapers available online, as well.

When JFK Jr. was killed, I bought the last edition of George magazine thinking that someday it may be valuable. It was the last issue he was President and Editor-in-Chief. I saw one on eBay a while back for $20. Looks like it may be a while.
