Move them to the percussion section for the pops. Yeah, that's right -- and it was awesome, too!
We went to see the NC Symphony for an outdoor performance any by the time they got to a lulling Strauss waltz, the kids were practically nodding off. (It was already waaaay past their bed times.) So we decided to head on back to the car.
Fortunately the way back took us right behind the outdoor stage. We walked up to where several others were standing -- at waist-high wall behind the orchestra -- and found ourselves practically smack dab in the middle of the percussion section. We could have probably reached out and touched the timpani!
And the timing could not have been better because that section just came alive -- Copland, some TV themes (from Dragnet, to William Tell overture, to I Love Lucy), and even Star Wars. (The kids just met Darth Vader et al while at Disney the other week.)
Needless to say the kids were wide-eyed until the very last note. Plus the got to see the musicians' view of the conductor, and lots of the instruments often obstructed by strings -- bassoon, tuba, trombones, and of course the timpani and drum kit. What a great night!
So I have to give outdoor performances an A++. Don't miss it if you get the chance! I'm off now to donate to the arts!
