    ACK My computer's possessed

    After the latest Win XP updates that Microsoft sent me my computer plays music on booting, and it seem to really slow it down on boot. The music seems to be random and not something I recognizes, currently it sounds like medieval madrigals. This starts with the Win boot screen and continues until it starts loading user configurations.

    I really haven't had time to dig into this and was hoping that someone knew where the setting was to turn it off. Of course if you don't know feel free to harangue me about the music on my computer.


    I have decided for now to unplug the speakers and listen to nothing.

              Blissful silence.

              I turned off all sound for all users and it is now booting in silence. I'll turn it back on and find out who was the offender. Interestingly non of the users had anything strange in the sound settings that can be seen, and there were no WAV files that contained the music I was hearing. My other thoughts are that it is/was some kind of infection, perhaps the RIAA getting even.

                          Is this the first time you've restarted the computer since April 1st? Sounds like someone might be playing a joke on you - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqk7aXSUsf0 (make sure the sound is turned down when you watch this).

                          You can change the startup sound in the Sounds control panel, Sounds tab, Start Windows selection. You might want to make sure it is set to the default (Windows XP Start, I think) for all users.

                              Thanks, I reboot at least once a day, that is to say, shut down at night as the cat likes to play with the keyboard. The music I was hearing was not listed as a sound in any of the user profiles. I turned off all sounds for each user and it seems to have stopped. To compound matters, assuming that it's a WAV file I am hearing, no WAV file on the computer sounds like it. If I have time tomorrow I'll play with it again.

                              Ran Spy-bot, AdAware, AVG and Trend Micro and found nothing that could be causing it.

                              Perhaps the voices have started singing...

                                  pm me a file with the music. If you can not find it, will so much for that idea. Me and my ideas at 1:47 in the morning for ya.
