I know, we have a couple of old threads on this :
How do I get a domain name? (Dec 2008)
and Website Hosting (Oct 2007)
but I have more questions, and hopefully you have updated answers
I am looking for a 'personal' website - for family pictures, a blog, and some experimental CGI/perl. I am using 1and1 currently, and would like to give them the boot. They are pretty cheap and for my purposes, rather hassle-free; but the last time my renewal date rolled over and I forgot to pay, they right-away sent my account to collections
! I noticed my lapse just a week late and tried to make reparations, and they told me I had to deal with collections and pay around $55 as fine for a $25 dues! Funny thing is, they bill in advance, so effectively they were penalizing me for not paying for services I had not even availed from them
!
I paid - but want to get out before the 6 month is over in may.
The choices for hosts I gathered from the other threads are
www.godaddy.com
www.brinkster.com
www.hostmonster.com
www.netfirms.com
anybody have any really bad experience with any of the above, or have any else to add to the list? (or, what made you choose one over the others?)
I may or may not use a DB, but feels nice to have it, just in case; as do the other features listed in most of their sites. But these features do puzzle me (I am quoting from godaddy; i presume the others offer these too) -
External Domains (is this just for domains I have registered elsewhere, and don't have to transfer? but isn't that by default?)
Subdomains ( is this like mydaughter.mysitename.com and mywife.mysitename.com?)
Multiple Web sites (so I could host a website for each of my daughters for the same cost? what's the catch?)
Alias Domains (
)
