    CL RAS Deal...

I saw a recent post here of a CMS with no guard. Since the RAS is the tool that scares me the most this one really caught my attention

The good news is that since it's a Craftsman, an upgraded blade guard and a new table are available free for the asking, due to a factory recall.

              And they are fast!

I just scored a Cman RAS for free. Ordered the kit on Thursday. At my house on on Monday.

Since Monday the box has moved from the porch to the garage!

Awesome, I had forgone the idea of restoring it figuring parts would be a fortune.

This thread brings to mind a current thread on Sawmill Creek by a fellow who is trying to decide between a Sawstop and a bunch of other tools.

Although I admire the technology behind a Sawstop, it isn;t the only tool that can cut off some of your valuable bits. RAS, jointer, bandsaw, router and even hand tools can inflict severe bodily harm if they are not respected.

I think you're doing exactly the right thing by thinking first about the safety devices.

WOW! That one is missing the entire top part of the blade guard. That part doesn't come with the upgrade. Anyone thinking of that saw should pass "RIGHT NOW!!!!

It did on mine. I think it varies with the original model number. Some of the stock guards can accept the upgrade, others can't, methinks.

I have a Craftsman RAS, circa 1974. Model # 113.29416. A ring guard was available as an option, but I didn't like the look or operation of it. The recall doesn't have a lower guard that will fit that particular model. There are bosses on the upper guard that should allow drilling and tapping for a lower guard. Maybe somewhere in the future I'll do that; but, after having the saw for almost 35 years, I've always been cautious enough to keep my fingers well away.

BTW, that particular saw that is pictured is much newer than mine, by at least 10 or 20 years I think. I simply cannot comprehend why people remove and/or loose such vital equipment as the blade guard. Obviously I have to remove my upper guard to change blades, check alignment, etc. Even with the saw unplugged, having that full blade exposed is pretty scary looking.

I recently purchased a second 113.28416 for use as a spare parts machine for $70. I bought it "sight unseen" from a distant friend who described it as being in very good condition (he inherited it from an uncle). He finally delivered it a few months ago... what a mess! It looked like it had been left out in the weather for some time. So much so, that the aluminum dress plate on the arm was corroded through. It was missing the splitter/anti-kickback assembly, the table lock-bolts, and several other parts. Column was so rusted it won't turn and the carriage bearings look awful. Compared to my RAS, it looked like it was from another century. So what I thought was a good deal my end up being just junk. This spring I'll disassemble the carriage and motor and see what I can salvage. Why in the world do some people have such disrespect for their equipment?

Before I'd buy I'd check the model number with Emerson's recall site. I picked up another RAS that looks identical to mine (which was eligible for the recall) but the one I picked up wasn't. Pat
