    Internet And Email Help

We brought home BIL's computer and paperwork that we could gather up. On hooking up his computer to get his records together, we stumbled on a problem.

We are on AT&T DSL. His computer is also on AT&T DSL. We first tried a hookup to our modem and no internet connection. We also have wi-fi and tried connecting with a router and no connection.

The problem is that AT&T is likely sensing our phone # and not recognizing his computer. Furthermore, we don't know his password to get into email. So, getting an internet connection is the first problem, and the email is the second.

We also don't know if he clicked "remember me" or not. The browser he used was IE.

Also, we tried to access his email account on our computer and even deleting our cookie, and asking for a forgotten password with his username, AT&T still pulls up our account, not his.

    Any suggestions are welcomed.

assuming you have a router that all your systems "hide" behind there shouldnet be anything from the network (ATT) stopping your connection. You should just have to boot it up and run a browser and off you go.

Did you try a hardwire (ethernet cable) connection to your router? Do you have security filters set on the router e.g. MAC addresses.

Job one is getting it running on the network, once you have that then move on to the email issue.

I'm a little unclear from the description, so there are a few questions...

If I'm reading correctly - The PC is currently at your residence and you have attempted an ethernet connection directly to your modem. There are can be several reasons that won't work - The modem may only allow a specific MAC address to connect (Hardware ID of your PC's network card), it also will probably only allow your logon credentials to establish a connection to the ATT network. The only options are to use a router to establish the modem connection and then share it among the PC's.

You mention you have wifi, is it a ATT modem/router/wifi combo or is it seperate piece of hardware. Are you able to hardwire directly to it or are you trying to connect to it wirelessly? Do you have to do anything to "connect" when you use the connection from your PC?

We've tried a direct to modem connection and by router that our other computers are on. We went into "controls" for internet connection with no luck,

We tried to access his email account on our computer and even deleting our cookie, and asking for a forgotten password with his username, AT&T still pulls up our account, not his.

First, I use cable and not DSL, so not quite sure how it works. That being said: You say you have tried wi-fi, does it actually see your network and connect to it? When you set up other computers, did you do it manually or use a CD from ATT? If CD it may have specific settings. Check the proxy settings. Try another browser like Firefox.

ATT has linked your email address to your IP it seems, or you are not deleting all your cookies. ATT could have a dozen cookies on your machine. Download and run a program called CCleaner (crap cleaner), it will get rid of all cookies. Try installing Firefox. It will be a completely separate set of cookies. When you have his computer hooked up to your switch you might also try going into Network Connections and right clicking and selecting repair.

If you cannot get access, you should be able to contact ATT and telling them he is deceased and they may give you access. You might have to prove your executor of the estate or whatnot though.

From the BIL's PC, do you get a connection to your router? If not, then the internet won't work. If possible, connecting to your router via a cable will be easier than connecting via wireless - less to configure.

Before worrying about cookies and browsers we need to establish that basic communications are functional. If I'm misreading and you can in fact browse websites from the PC, disregard. Your best bet is to get his PC working as it sounds like you've used the ATT setup CD on at least your PC's, which can throw alot of red herrings.

Are you able to ping your other computers or the router from his computer? Your router will likely be 192.168.1.1. What is the IP address of his computer? What is the output of (from the command line) ipconfig?

Try the following pings from the command line on his PC while connected to the router.

                ping 127.0.0.1
                ping 192.168.1.1
                ping 209.131.36.158
                ping www.yahoo.com
