Another tragic story involving children who innocently depend on their parents to protect them. I read many of the comments and some folks are already saying the railroad is at fault for not having barricade arms that come down when the train is approaching, even though there are warning lights there already. For the mother I think it is natural selection at work, she has to be dumber than dirt. Oh and here is one comment about the accident:

"I myself have raced to beat trains at that exact same crossing. I am a mother of 3 children and seem to always be ten minutes behind. Just because she didn't see the other train coming doesn't make her a bad mother. Sometimes children die and there is nobody to blame. I only hope that her children's tragic deaths will be a reminder to her and everyone that we should leave a little earlier next time. "

I always hate to read stories like this. People can be so impatient. This type of behavior is reprehensible. My wife and I lost our first child to leukemia and one day after reading a story like this, my wife asks me why did our child have to go while others can be so irresponsible with theirs. Don't know the answer to that one, but I would hate to have to live with the guilt that this mother will feel. She survived and is in critical condition and thankfully two other children are in stable condition. The two that died were ejected from the vehicle.

You are so right. The saddest part is that it was totally preventable.

The story is tragic, but THIS I find about hilarious:

"Hammond needs to do something about putting gates up," said Margarita Vargas, 24, who lives between the CSX tracks and the nearby South Shore Line tracks. "I've seen quite a few people almost get hit by the train."

Ah yes, please put up the gates so we impatient drivers are actually FORCED to stop!

But then we have this:

At 2 p.m. Saturday, the CSX warning gates at Hohman Avenue came down as engineers were testing the warning signals at Johnson Avenue, just two blocks down.

After the gates came down six vehicles drove around the lowered arms, just an hour after the train that killed two people was cleared from the same tracks.

Ain't it priceless? So, when a train hits someone who decided to drive around lowered gates, what will the accusation be? The gates were not long enough to block the road completely?

That is so tragic. What could have been so important for her to risk her childrens lives?

And all it will prove is her other 2 kids will suffer. Stories like this suck and thats about all I can say about it. There is very little difference in being stupid and try to beat the train vs being in a hurry and letting your kid in the car for hours by mistake. Accident by stupidity and unfortunately being stupid is still legal.
