Thanks for all the suggestions. I found the fitting that comes with the ppol that lets you hook a hose to the drain. After that it was easy. 
So now the water drains into the pump and back into the pool. I think I will try to get the strainer basket hooked in - it will make treating the water easier.
Only problem was treating the water before I went swimming after digging and pouring footings today. Can't swim after shocking until I get the ph balanced.
