    Email SNAFU

So I took a vacation day today and drove out to Rockler in Buffalo to take a look at the store as well as attend to some personal business out there. I get back home around 2:30 and decide to email someone at work about a meeting tomorrow morning to confirm the time. We use Lotus Notes as our email system at work. It sucks. That's all you ever need to know about it.

So, I use the address lookup function to add this persons email address to the 'To' field in the email, type my message and hit send. Fair enough I thought, that should be that.

    Ummm, no.

You see, in it's infinite wisdom, Notes somehow added a Distribution List for an employee survey to the email recipients list. So now, instead of just one person getting the email, EVERYONE GETS IT.

Ok, so no harm there, the content was harmless and professional. All that means is that over a thousand people got the email. And that would have been that except that human nature dictates that when you get an email incorrecly addressed to you, you very nicely reply to the sender letting them know of there error. I'm all good with that, my mistake, I'm ok with deleting all the replies. All 782 of them. My bad, fair enough.

Except that for some reason, some people have to reply to all, which means that now everyone on the original list also gets the email. And the next one. And the next. And so on. And then people get pissed at more emails coming in so they reply to everyone saying 'STOP REPLYING TO ALL'. I mean, my God, how dumb is that? Yes, I'm the idiot who sent the original one but even I had the brains to not reply to any of the messages in order to stop more going out but some people just don't get it!!!

Anyways, it took our email system down and now I'm infamous. All on my day off....

Really looking forward to going to work tomorrow.......

Oh, man, that's so funny... It's like something that would start a segment on the tv program The Office.

I can just imagine that happening when your message to your colleague was less than professional. That would really light up the switchboard!

Good luck tomorrow. Maybe you should put a stick note on your shirt "Kick Me" or something...

That is too funny. Tomorrow when you go to work just make sure your boss knows that you are so dedicated that you were working on your vacation day.

Yeah, the "Reply to All.." function is a real PITA when used by idiots .... especially when they hit "All" and the reply really was meant only for one person. gets embarassing sometimes!

          Nice!

But I think I can top it (not personally)

Last week we had someone email the entire site (~800 people) with their paypal account and password and instruction on how to buy a video game on ebay (personal email, intended for a relative). She then re-emailed the site about 2hrs later to let everyone know she was (supposedly) doing that on her break time, her supervisor had okayed it, and that she had changed her paypal password.

So did your boss give you an "ata boy" for working on your day off yesterday?

Nope, my real boss is out sick for the next few weeks so he doesn't even know!

Also, only caught minimal crap for it today, just the good natured cracks from a few of my team.....I fired them for their insolence......

              Just kidding.

They'll be working this weekend. That reminds me, I must tell them that. On Friday at 4:45pm.....

Reply all is a pain. We have a few people at work that do that to an email forewarded to 5-10 people. And the reply all message......

                  "Thanks"
