I saw this project a long while back and thought ... "someday" .... it was showcased on The WoodSmith Shop season 8. I modified the dimensions a bit and added a couple of twists but basically it's that box.
If I never cut another 22.5 degree angle it will be fine with me ... getting the spline groves cut EXACTLY right was for me a challenge. The woods are red oak sides, white oak bottom border, black walnut top border and the corners are from some cocobolo I had as scrap. I used waterlox original as the finish and was pleased with that product (first time I used it).
I installed a windup 18 note musical movement that plays "My Favorite Things" when the lid is raised.
I bought the inlay for the top from Inlay Product World and was pretty shocked at what they can cost ...
It has a wart or two but I hope she will enjoy it as she gets older (she's 6 now) ...
