There's a Mission style bed in there somewhere ...

Took an 8 hour round trip to my favorite sawmill today ... picked up just less than 100bf of white oak (rift and quarter sawn) ... my grandson needs a new bed so the expected sibling can take over the crib in September.

Daughter and SIL want Mission style but darker than I would consider traditional ... regardless ... there must be a bed in this pile somewhere ...

That's how a woodworker buys furniture. Some assembly required. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks guys ... yeah a little hard to see at the moment. This is S2S lumber which I don't typically buy. Usually I get rough sawn and plane it myself. The mill had this mix of rift and quarter sawn that he let me pick through and gave me an "ok" price since I was buying about 100bf. The 400+ mile round trip adds to the cost but the cost of similar wood around San Antonio is astronomical and I got to drive through the pretty wildflowers along the way.

This will be made from the same plan I used to build my wife's queen sized bed several years ago but in a "full sized" version. Link to that project

Daughter and SIL prefer a much darker tone in their furniture than what I would consider "traditional" for mission style but it's their choice so I plan to use more of the rift sawn wood than quarter since not as much of the grain and medular rays will show through.

I'll post some progress pics along the way ... it has to be finished around late August so I need to get moving ...

Can't wait to see your progress. I'll be starting a mission-style dresser project very soon as well.

Looks good cant wait to see the progress Bade. Sharpen up all your tools as White Oak eats blades, chisels and plane irons for lunch.

What did you use to connect the headboard and footboard? I used the cheap little kit from woodcraft. My son has been complaining about how much his bed squeaks.

For the bunk beds I built our boys a couple years ago I used the bolts and barrel nut kits from Rockler. I just cranked them really tight and they've had no problems with squeaking.

Just 2 nights ago I had to break down the entire set since we're doing some major work in their bedroom (new ceilings, etc) and I was pleased how well it broke down with just a small zip-lock of parts (2 sets of bolts/barrel nuts for each leg joint, 4 metal dowels to bunk the beds, and a couple misc screws that thread into threaded inserts for the upper rails.

I bought a metal frame from Amazon (I think) that had brackets on the ends and I used heavy lag bolts to secure the head/foot against the frame with those ... no squeaking I have heard ... it doesn't get heavy use it is in a guest bedroom

As I sometimes tell my wife, "Much assembly required." Have fun!

We love QS and rift sawn white oak. It's nice that you're making a bed for your Grandson.
A matching nightstand with be wonderful too. Are you doing the dark finish or a lighter
finish? I like the lighter finish. What does your family want, light or dark?

They have requested a darker finish than traditional mission style. I'll consider a nightstand after I see what kind of mental mood I'm in after the bed is done. [emoji3]
