    Yet Another Bookcase

Built from a Woodsmith plan with only scale and finish modifications - original plan was one unit (white painted poplar with maple cap); I made three to go together to cover an entire wall in a library.

    Construction notes:

Full oak plywood case and shelves with solid oak face frame. Top cove molding formed on the table saw. Black inlays in vertical fluting are glue-on oak banding (ripped to 1/4" width on the table saw and individually stained with black India ink before being glued into flutes.) Vertical fluting in face frame cut with a router and jig, the design for which was provided in the Woodsmith plan.)

Finish: 3 coats oil-based polyurethane (all non-black parts) and 3 coats water-based polyurethane over India ink (black parts.)

    Size: 7ft tall x 9ft wide x 1ft deep.

Took about 6 months (on and off) to complete.

The keen-eyed will observe that I have replaced the original picture background; no sense in ruining a good shot with shop clutter!

really nice work! can you explain again what the flute inlays are. Do you mean the flutes where cut and then the voids filled with another wood so its level with the surface? COuld you post a close up. Thanks

These cases look really good. I also have that article in Woodsmith marked for future use on tv case I must build sometimes soon, after I build the laundry room cabinets. I liked the detail about the filled fluting but rather than go to that much work was thinking about making that part of the face frame a glued stack up with already stained dark wood instead of inserts, then sand flat like a butcher block. Me and inserts don't have a good outcome.
            Against looks really good.

At first I thought you were showing the Woodsmith shelves and yours would be below. Very nice. I like all the detail work at the top.

no, the shelves are not fixed. There is a pair of shelf standards on each inside wall for adjustment of the shelf positions. There are five shelves per unit, although only three are shown for each in the photo.

The black color in the flutes is from black-stained (India ink) wood banding glued into each flute. Since it's just thin banding it's only at the bottom of each flute. This was a decision I made to eliminate the possibility of ruining the piece if I screwed up while trying to directly apply the ink into the flutes with a thin brush or similar applicator. I also did not want to color the entire inner surface of each flute as that was too much black (test applications revealed that.) So think of what I did as an alternative way of drawing a straight thick black line in each flute. See detail in attached photo.

Beautiful work! Great idea using edge banding to 'fill' the flutes.
