Jon, was the walnut one piece, in the photos it kinda looked as if they were two pieces (maybe glued together)? I was wondering about that considering the clamping forces and all.

Sorry Alex! It was worth losing a few winks over though.
I think in straight lines, but dream in curves

Actually this is quite funny. I did actually make them from two pieces but you cant tell without looking really close so I wondered how you could tell from the photo. Although I intend to coat them with poly and paste wax to prevent glue issues, as I needed them quickly I just affixed packing tape to the faces and this caused a reflection in the photo that looks like a joint line.

As it happens I just dug into my scap box for the right number of pieces of a similar size and there werent enough that would allow me to cut the corners from a single piece. When I thought about it, the glued version is probably stronger. If there was ever going to be a point of weakness it would be in the short grain side at the corner joint. In my experience a glue joint is actually stronger than the wood.

As this clamp is primarily for pulling together miters the clamping force isnt really that great so I doubt either construction methond would be in danger of breaking.

After making this clamping system and the frames I put the finish on last weekend and managed to get the pictures into the frames this weekend.

You can see the results in this post.

This forum is the place to post photos of your completed projects. Please try to limit pictures to 540px wide or less so that is is viewable to all. Off-topic threads in this forum will periodically be purged so as to keep it "clean".

Your solution looks like a good one, also.
I have a shop built version of the ones that UC linked to. They work great. This thread illustates that for many given woodworking problems there are a number of good solutions. Sometimes even ones that do not cost much. Great thread!

Folks I am going to move this thread to Best of Forum as that is where I think it really needs to be. Lots of great information here. A long lasting link will remain in the Project Related Discussions.

Nice idea. I wonder if anyone here has tried quick-release knobs like those sold by J. W. Winco. These would seem to be ideal, except for the price ($10 ea).

EDIT Oops! I see that Rockler has them for only 3.49 ea.
Unfortunately they're not metric, which is what I'll probably need.

If you'll look around the Home-Centers, I think that you'll find also an "English" threaded rods...

On the picture you can see the rods and the "long nut" - 1/2" x 50(mm) that I'm using to connect two rods if needed.

                  Regards
