    Medium-sized White Ash bowl

Something I did for a visiting relative, made from local urban timber. Used a decorating tool on the rim of the bowl. Thanks for looking!

Another great video. That detail tool was very cool. That was a great edge.

      Bill,

I really like the shape of that bowl. Was there a reason you did the edge detail before hollowing out the rest of the bowl? In my mind I would think of doing that after sanding and right before finishing.

Thanks guys. The tool is versatile, can do many patterns, and I hope to show off some of the more pronounced ones in future projects. As far as order of operation - I learned (from a mentor and personal experience) to always work the bowl rim details before you remove the bulk of the interior, and once you complete the rim, you don't go back after hollowing - this because regardless of how dry the wood is, internal stresses will be released when hollowing, and cause some amount of movement along the grain (usually oblongation of the hollow form). Once this happens,it presents high and low spots to the tool, meaning inconsistent contact, which at a minimum doesn't look nice, but could also cause a catch. Imagine adding a detail line with a point tool, and having it only contact the wood one two opposing sides, but not the adjacent sides.
