I think the coating on the deck screws helps slide them in easier. That's sad the impact driver couldn't even drive that screw into cedar.

I've found with my Makita impact driver that when it's freshly charged, it doesn't need to use impact vs when it's not fully charged. If I'm driving a lot of screws with my impact driver, especially indoors, I wear hearing protection.

Just for a lark, I went in and weighed the drill/drivers: the 12v and the 20v ones.

I am sharing them here for reference, in case somebody comes searching later:

Milwaukee 12v combo (with Li-Ion batteries)
      Hammer drill / driver : 2lb 11.25 oz (1229 grams)
      Impact driver : 2lb 6.25 oz (1085 grams)

Dewalt 20v set (with Li-Ion batteries)
      Drill / driver : 3lb 7.5 oz (1572 grams)
      Impact driver : 2lb 12.4 oz (1260 grams)

      Craftsman 19.2v drill/driver : 4lb 3.75oz (1922 grams)

For the record, the 20v does not seem all that heavier than the 12v, nowhere close to how heavy the Craftsman was!

My all-time favorite drill/driver set is the 12V set from Dewalt. They fit in my hand perfect.
The Milwaukee M12 set is also fantastic.

        I couldn't afford these sets when I needed one - so I have a 12V Makita drill/driver set.
My set does most of what I needed it to do. (basic stuff)

When I need more than basic - my corded Makita does the job fine.

One thing the 12V helps me with ------- I have figured out the value of a good screw.

My highpoint screws are fantastic. The Kreg set is slightly above average. Then - there's the assortment I have from
        the Big Box...........
