Instead of making a bowl out this block of walnut burl I decided to cut it up. I am going to try making 1911 grips. I guess I could have practiced before slicing it up. I might be able to get a set off the big leaf maple pieces I cut off the block before ruining that bowl. The pieces are big enough to get two grips out of each unless I go after the best grain. Then it would only be one each with a lot of waste. I will see how the practice set goes. Or make practice sets until I am good at it. I know it mostly comes down to drilling perfectly spaced holes. I am going to make a jig for that so hopefully I don't ruin any wood with misplaced holes.

Although I have done it without the step drill, I wished I would have had one. The difference between the bushing od and the screw od leaves a very small step in the grip. With the wonderful figure on those blanks I'd be tempted to not checker them. This is given that my checkering is on par with the best, but also because I prefer smooth stocks.Donate to my Tour de Cure
