    First segmented bowl in cherry

I had a commission from somebody who wanted a 16" bowl. Blanks that size are pricey and not easy to come by. I went for a segmented approach and was pretty happy with the result.

          Wow! That is so beautiful!

16"? Is that done the way I envisage it to be - laminating different pieces of cherry for 3 layers on a base that seems to have been a single piece? For a total of 4 layers, which is then turned on the lathe?

Must take some effort to turn that big, right?

Pretty much. The base was 2 pieces glued up. I had never turned something this large before. the swing of my lathe is 16" so had to start with the headstock at one end and the piece just off the end of the lathe bed. Once I had rounded off the corners and had it just a hair under 16" at the rim I moved the headstock back to its usual position. as it wasnt too far out of balance it wasnt as hard as I imagined to turn. Here is a picture of the glued up blank.

Thanks - that and the picture helped.

Jon, not sure how I missed this thread earlier - very nicely done! A new slippery slope in the segmenting subculture of woodturning...

Thanks Bill. I definitely want to try my hand at some basic segmented and laminated bowls/vessels. Sizing and squaring the segments seems to be one of the critical aspects. I think some form of disc sanding jig will need to be the order of the day. I have also discovered how inaccurate and inconsistent my SCMS is which is rather disappointing to say the least.
