    Results of first turning attempt.

While it's not a showcase piece by any means, I'm kind of amazed it came out as well as it did.

That looks great! Nice attention to details! Looks like it is comfortable to use as well. What did you do for a finish?

For the finish I used Shellawax liquid friction polish. I basically went to Rockler and asked for the easiest wood to turn, easiest finish ... and this was the result. No reason setting yourself up for failure.

Is that "marble wood" or "olive wood"? Looks like it could be either.

              Now that looks really nice!

Nice wood with distinctive grain and a really nice turning. The shape looks comfortable to the hand and I love the detailed lines and smooth looking gloss finish.

Makes me wish I had a lathe, thanks!

Very nice handle! My guess is olive, but agree with Hank, could be marblewood. Nice wire-burning details, did you make your own wire burners?

It is in fact olive wood. The wire used was on hand in the Rockler classroom so I gave it a try. It looks easy enough to make though.

Nice job for your first time. I am in the same boat as a new lather user and have been making lots of shavings and a bunch of odd shaped bowls. I am still coming to grip with the whole process and still find it odd but understandable that with bowls you actually sand and finish one part before even cutting the other.

What Lathe setup do you have?
