    My...ummm...first woodworking project

Here we go. The #1 reason I decided to get into woodworking. Up until I started in this, I had never built anything with wood. Well, nothing that didn't require nails or screws, anyhow, so I'm pretty excited.

    Back and sides: honduran mahogany
    Top: sitka spruce
    Bindings: white oak
Bridge, fingerboard, and headstock overlay: Madagascar Rosewood
All work, inlays, etc, done myself

For those musically inclined among you, here's some more:
    dreadnought body
    pre-war forward shifted/scalloped bracing
    maple bridge plate
    bone nut/saddle/tuners
    hot hide glue used throughout
    Grover Sta-tite tuners
    nitro finish
at least a few quarts of blood, sweat and tears

Binding, neck joint, etc, cut on my BT3, of course!

Dang! If this is your first project, I shudder to think what you'll be turning out in a few years! I stand humbled.

Great looking guitar. I really like the inlay work.

Wow!!! That is excellent work - even more so for a beginner. I'm sure I couldn't even get close to that standard yet (and probably not for quite a while).
How many hours of love and labor are in that baby?

Your binding is awesome looking. I love the white black white. Did you bend by hand or use a fox bending jig? -shawn

Now, I'm probably totally wrong about this...but doesn't it seem strange that Tundra Man (our resident electric guitar maker) responded to this post just 6 minutes after it was posted?

And this workmanship is way too good for a beginner....

So, my conspiracy-theorist side started thinking that maybe, just maybe Westex93 is actually Tundra's alter ego... the one that makes acoustic guitars. Westex93 could be quite correct saying that it's his first project - 'cos Tundra made all the prior ones...
and of course Tundra could not admit to going over to the dark side and making acoustic thingy's.

And why did he put the 'umm' in the title of the post?

of course I'm probably totally wrong...........

                (or am I?)

                  Sandbagger???

Man that is one fine looking Guitar....truly just gorgeous. I too would love to know what you used for that High Gloss finish and the inlaid crosses are a beautiful touch!!!! Something even a Master woodworker would be proud of.

Thanks, y'all! I appreciate the feedback.

Yep, it's really my first. Of course, I've been studying this guitar building thing for some time before I got into it. And hours??? Wow, I don't even wanna think about that!! Including hours building jigs, molds, forms, etc... Let's just say it's a good thing I'm not doing this stuff for a living!

In all seriousness, though, I guess I've been working on this close to a year - off and on. A learning experience, to say the least!

Shawn, to bend the sides I built a bending form (not quite Fox-style, just an open form) covered in stainless. Used a silicone heating blanket with a sandwich of SS shim stock on either side. Sides were wrapped in foil to keep in the moisture. The sides were actually bent dry, though. Just wraped in foil.

No real secret in the finish. Just Behlen's nitrocellulose laquer sprayed with a cheapo Preval spray unit I picked up at HF. Worked pretty doggone good! I'm sure I'll get a spray rig for the next one, but those Prevals are handy little buggers! Refillable glass cups that you can mix up anything you want to spray. Handy thing is you can keep several of them around - they're cheap enough - and keep them stored with your favorite solution. When you wantto use it, pop a spray unit on top and go at it. Great for small jobs!

After the finish cured (a couple of weeks), started sanding with 220 to level, worked up to 800 and went straight to a buffing wheel chucked in my drill press. I'm pretty happy with it.

As a guitar, I have no idea how good that is...As a piece of art it is fantastic! The inlays are great.
